# A-to-Z setup: Lighter

This page walks you **from the very beginning to your first automated strategy on Lighter**. Each step tells you **where to go** and **what to click**, then points to a detailed page if you want to dig deeper. No technical knowledge required.

> Would you rather trade on Hyperliquid? Follow [A-to-Z setup: Hyperliquid](/docs/english/installation-pas-a-pas/installation-hyperliquid.md) instead. The two journeys are equivalent: only the exchange changes.

## A few words before you start

Two services are involved, and it helps to tell them apart clearly:

* **Lighter**: the trading platform. It is a marketplace for **perpetuals** (contracts that track the price of an asset, with no expiry date), built on a fast, low-cost **overlay** on top of Ethereum. This is where your money lives and where orders are placed.
* **Botlyz**: the software that automatically runs a **strategy** (a set of buy and sell rules) on your Lighter account, following exactly the configuration you have approved.

> 👉 In short: your money stays with **you** and on **Lighter**. Botlyz places and cancels orders according to your rules, but **can never withdraw your funds**.

The full journey has **eight steps**. Expect around 15 to 20 minutes the first time.

## Step 1: Connect your wallet to Botlyz

A **wallet** is a small app (often a browser extension) that holds your identity on the blockchain. If you don't have one, we recommend **Rabby**.

1. Open **botlyz.com** and click **"Connect wallet"** (or "Sign in").
2. Select your wallet and **sign** the message that appears.
3. This signature is **free**, **off-chain** (no transaction, no fees), and simply proves that this wallet is yours.

> **Important**: signing this message gives Botlyz **no access** to your money. It is just a way to identify you, with no email or password.

✅ For the details (choosing a wallet, signature security), see [Connect your wallet](/docs/english/installation-pas-a-pas/connecter-votre-wallet.md).

## Step 2: Create your Lighter account

You now need an account on the Lighter trading platform.

1. Open our account creation link: [app.lighter.xyz/?referral=BOTLYZ](https://app.lighter.xyz/?referral=BOTLYZ).
2. **Connect your wallet** (preferably the same one used for Botlyz) and **sign** to confirm.

> **Important**: at this stage, your **trading account does not exist yet**. On Lighter, your wallet is the "owner" (the top layer); the dedicated **trading sub-account** will only be created at the **first deposit** (see the next step). It is normal not to see a balance yet.

✅ For the details, see [Create a Lighter account](/docs/english/installation-pas-a-pas/creer-un-compte-lighter.md).

## Step 3: Deposit funds

The deposit serves two purposes: it **creates your trading sub-account** and it funds it with capital (in **USDC**, a stablecoin pegged to the dollar).

1. On Lighter, open [app.lighter.xyz/portfolio](https://app.lighter.xyz/portfolio) then click **"Deposit"**.
2. Choose the method that suits you:
   * **"Cash"**: by bank card or transfer (handy if you don't have crypto yet).
   * **"Connect exchange"**: link an exchange (for example Binance) to move your funds.
   * **"Transfer crypto"**: send crypto from a wallet, choosing the **token** and the **blockchain**; once received at the displayed address, the amount is **automatically converted to USDC** on Lighter.
3. Confirm the deposit and wait for it to appear in your Lighter portfolio.

> **Important**: it is **this first deposit that creates your trading sub-account**. Until you have deposited, the following steps cannot be completed.

✅ For the details of the deposit methods, see [Deposit funds](/docs/english/installation-pas-a-pas/deposer-des-fonds.md).

## Step 4: Create your API key and connect it to Botlyz

An **API key** is a technical identifier that allows Botlyz to place orders on your trading sub-account, **and nothing else**.

1. On Lighter, open [app.lighter.xyz/apikeys](https://app.lighter.xyz/apikeys).
2. Click **"Generate API Key"**, then choose an **index** between **4 and 254** (indexes 0 to 3 are reserved by Lighter). There is **no permission to choose**: a Lighter API key can only trade, never withdraw anyway.
3. Lighter displays the **private key only once**: copy it and keep it safe before closing the page.
4. In Botlyz, go to **Accounts**, click **"+ Connect an account"** (**Lighter** tab), and fill in:
   * Your **Ethereum address** (your wallet's address).
   * The chosen **key index** (for example 4).
   * The **private key** you just copied.
5. Botlyz verifies the key with Lighter, then **encrypts** it (it is never stored in plain text).

> **Important**: this key controls **only** the trading sub-account, so it **can only trade**. **No withdrawal to an external address is possible.** Botlyz never has access to your owner wallet, and a withdrawal can only go back **to your own wallet**, triggered **by you** on Lighter.

✅ For the details (permissions, sub-accounts, security best practices), see [Connect your account to Botlyz](/docs/english/installation-pas-a-pas/connecter-un-compte-lighter.md).

## Step 5: Approve the integration fee

Before deploying your first strategy on this account, Botlyz asks you to **approve the integration fee**: **0.10%** (that is 10 basis points) automatically charged on each order.

1. Botlyz generates a **message to sign** (off-chain, free).
2. You **sign** it with your wallet.
3. Botlyz records your approval. This is done **only once per account**.

> **Important**: approving this fee **moves no funds**. It is a protocol fee, collected and paid out by the platform as orders are placed; it is **not** an invoice and **not** a commission on your gains.

✅ For the details of the fee model, see [Fees](/docs/english/frais.md).

## Step 6: Choose or build a strategy, configure it, backtest it

You are ready to create your first strategy. Two paths are possible:

* **Choose from the catalog**: start from a ready-to-use strategy. See [Strategies overview](/docs/english/vue-d-ensemble.md).
* **Build in the Builder**: assemble your own rules, without writing code, using indicators. See [The Builder](/docs/english/le-builder.md).

Then **configure** your strategy:

1. Choose the **pair** to trade (for example HYPE).
2. Set the allocated **capital**, the **leverage** (the multiplier effect, to handle with care) and the **allocation** (the share of your capital committed). See [Risk parameters](/docs/english/parametres-de-risque.md).
3. Run a **backtest**: Botlyz replays your rules on past data to show you how the strategy would have behaved. See [Backtest](/docs/english/backtest.md).

> **Important**: a backtest describes the **past**, never the future. It helps you understand a strategy's behavior; it promises no result. A **minimum tradable capital** is required depending on the pair and your settings; Botlyz displays it before deployment (see the [Deploy a strategy](/docs/english/installation-pas-a-pas/deployer-une-strategie.md) page).

## Step 7: Sign and deploy

When your configuration suits you, you **approve** it securely.

1. Botlyz shows you a summary of your configuration (the chosen exchange is part of it).
2. You **sign** it (**EIP-712** signature: a readable and detailed signature, **off-chain** and free, that locks in exactly your parameters).
3. You **tick** the risk acknowledgment boxes.
4. You click **"Deploy"**. The strategy becomes active and starts placing orders according to your rules.

> **Important**: signing moves no funds. It is your formal, verifiable approval of the exact configuration the software will run.

✅ For the details of deployment (checks, SIGMA and Builder paths), see [Deploy a strategy](/docs/english/installation-pas-a-pas/deployer-une-strategie.md). To understand the signature, see [Signature and transparency](/docs/english/signature-et-transparence.md).

## Step 8: Monitor on the dashboard

Once deployed, your strategy is managed from the Botlyz **dashboard**.

* **Monitor**: open positions, balance and trade history are shown live.
* **Pause / resume**: you stay in control at any time.
* **Edit**: change parameters if needed (a new signature will be requested).

> 👉 From time to time, the Botlyz **engine** is updated (improvements, fixes). When that happens, all you need to do is **re-sign** your strategy with the **same parameters**: nothing changes in your configuration, it is a simple security confirmation.

## Recap checklist

✅ Wallet connected to Botlyz (connection signature done). ✅ Lighter account created via the referral link. ✅ Funds deposited on Lighter (the trading sub-account is created). ✅ "Trade-only" API key (index 4 to 254) created and connected to Botlyz. ✅ Integration fee (0.10%) approved once for this account. ✅ Strategy chosen or built, configured and backtested. ✅ Configuration signed (EIP-712) and strategy deployed. ✅ Monitoring in place on the dashboard (pause / resume / edit mastered).

## Frequently asked questions

**Q. Do I have to do all these steps in order?**

Yes, order matters. In particular, the **deposit** (step 3) creates the trading sub-account needed for the API key (step 4), and the fee approval (step 5) is requested before your first deployment.

**Q. Can Botlyz withdraw my money?**

No, never. The API key you give Botlyz **can only trade**. No withdrawal to an external address is possible, and a withdrawal can only go back to your own wallet, triggered by you on Lighter.

**Q. How long does setup take?**

Expect around 15 to 20 minutes the first time. Once your account and key are in place, deploying a new strategy only takes a few minutes.

**Q. Why does my Lighter account look "empty" after creating it?**

That is normal: your **trading sub-account** is only created at the **first deposit**. Deposit funds (step 3) and the balance will appear.

**Q. What happens when the Botlyz engine is updated?**

Your strategy asks you to **re-sign** with the same parameters. It is a security confirmation: your configuration stays identical, no funds are moved.

**Q. Can I stop a strategy at any time?**

Yes. From the dashboard, you can pause it, resume it, edit it or delete it whenever you want. You stay in control at all times.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://botlyz.gitbook.io/docs/english/installation-pas-a-pas/installation-lighter.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
